Bellingrath gardens and home BELLINGRATH GARDENS
From the glorious array of Mums silhouetting Mirror Lake in late Autumn to the breathtaking explosion of over 250,000 Azaleas in Spring, Bellingrath Gardens is in full bloom year-round. Encompassing 65 landscaped acres in the midst of a 905-acre semi-tropical rain forest on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Bellingrath Gardens is one of the most popular destination gardens in the United States.
USS ALABAMA Battleship USS ALABAMA BATTLESHIP
Decommissioned in 1947, the ship was "moth balled" in Bremerton, Washington until 1946 when she was transferred to the State of Alabama. She was towed 5,600 miles to USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, still the longest non-military ton/mile tow in history, and opened on 9 January 1965. She has hosted almost 10 million paid visitors. She serves as a memorial to all Alabama veterans of all branches of the military service.
Fort Morgan FORT MORGAN, PICKENS, & GAINES
Fort Morgan Constructed from 1819-1834 as part of the defenses of Mobile Bay. Fort Gaines, constructed in the 1850's, was designed by Joseph G. Totten. Fort Pickens was designed by the French military engineer Simon Bernard, who had been hired by the United States as a consultant. All three of these Forts are very close by and are not only informative to visit but fun also. You can take a ferry from Fort Morgan to Fort Gaines or vice-versa.
Blakely State Park BLAKELEY STATE PARK
This park encompasses the largest National Historic Register site east of the Mississippi River (3,800 acres). Once home to a pre- historic Indian civilization (full of Indian burial mounds). Along with alot more history. It also has 5-1\2 miles of unspoiled Civil War fortifications, 8 miles of nature trails in an environmental paradise, and cabin availability, among many other things.
